Poplar Starbucks to close, reopen in bank

A Poplar Avenue Starbucks will relocate — inside a bank.

The Starbucks currently located at 6161 Poplar Ave. will move next door to the Trustmark National Bank branch at 6165 Poplar Ave.

“We are happy to share that we are relocating our store. … The new store will feature a drive-thru and café, in the same building as Trustmark Bank,” said a Starbucks spokesperson.

A building permit valued at $675,000 was filed Sept. 8, 2016, for “renovation to existing Trustmark Bank” at the 6165 Poplar Ave. site. Trustmark Bank was listed as the owner and Starbucks as the tenant.

Starbucks will lease the space from Trustmark.

“Carter Campbell, with National Property Concepts, initiated the transaction by bringing the idea to us,” said Gene Henson, regional president for Memphis Trustmark. “After careful consideration and discussion on logistics, market trends and the impact to our current customers of the Poplar Ridgeway location, we felt it would be a great opportunity to modernize our facility, introduce our new myTeller interactive teller machine and offer the convenience of a full-service Starbucks.”

The branch will close Friday, March 3, for renovations and will reopen in third quarter 2017. Letters informing customers about the temporary closure are expected to be mailed out Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Customers can visit the Memphis Trustmark corporate office at 5350 Poplar Ave. or the Germantown branch at 1405 S. Germantown Road while the Poplar Ridgeway location is under construction.

Once the remodel is finished, the bank will also have a DepositExpress ATM, which lets customers make envelope-free cash and check deposits any time of day, in addition to the myTeller machine and full-service Starbucks.

“This will be an extensive renovation, both on the exterior and interior of the building,” Henson said.

Jackson, Mississippi-based Trustmark Corp. (NASDAQ: TRMK) is the holding company of Trustmark National Bank.
